WordPress 4.6

Even if WordPress 4.6 is not launched yet, some of the new features have been made public:

  • New work flow for the Cateogories and Tags pages. WordPress theme and plugin authors who have added custom functionality to these screens are advised to double-check their code against this new version of WP;
  • WordPress will drop Google Fonts from it’s admin and will get back to system fonts, so once Open Sans will be replaced by the system fonts the people from WordPress are expecting a major improvements for the backend.

A new WordPress hosting service for the enterprise level users

Media Temple has launched a new WordPress hosting solution dedicated to the enterprise level users. What got my attention here was the fact that Media Temple is owned by GoDaddy but they are hosting this service on AWS. The official explanation was that “Media Temple’s servers are good, but there are things we can do with Amazon’s technology that you can’t do with a virtual private server”.

The standard enterprise plan costs $2,500 per month comes with support for five sites, one terabyte of cloud storage, 1.5 terabytes of monthly CDN usage, scaling to up to 10 EC2 instances using containers, and support for Amazon’s RDS database

VersionPress

According to the official presentation, VersionPress is a free and open source version control plugin for WordPress built on Git with the following main features

  • Undo changes
  • Create staging sites
  • Merge databases

VersionPress tracks all the actions in a WordPress site and simply offers an undo button for them. VersionPress creates versions for options, themes, plugins, users, uploads, comments, terms, basically everything so it can’t be really compared with WordPress’ default revisions functionality. More details can be found on the official page.
